IMPROVING THE LIVES OF CHILDREN LIVING IN POVERTY AROUND THE WORLD THROUGH EDUCATION
We find, fund and partner with educators and organizations that are leading local innovative ways to improve the quality of education for children living in poverty. We provide small, multi-year grants and support to local leaders who know their communities and are making an impact. We help them in their efforts to build, sustain and grow their work, enabling them to improve the lives of even more youth.
Global Education Fund is committed to helping children see possibilities beyond what they experience every day, and we work to give children the opportunity to make a difference in their lives and communities. Through education, we envision each child having access to the greater world and the opportunity to participate in it.
GLOBAL EDUCATION FUND'S PAST
Global Education Fund was founded in 1998 by anthropologist Eliza Woloson. In the beginning, GEF focused on providing books and literacy tools to orphanages and learning centers in Latin America. Over the next decade, Global Education Fund expanded to 22 countries. In 2007, Global Education Fund scaled back on the number of countries it operated in, but expanded its impact - by broadening its scope from providing literacy tools to removing barriers to education for children in Kenya, through scholarships and leadership programs. Later, GEF expanded to India and Guatemala.
GLOBAL EDUCATION FUND TODAY
Today, Global Education Fund is focused on removing obstacles to education in three high-need countries: Kenya, India and Guatemala. Global Education Fund has stayed true to its founding principles – listen to local needs, work collaboratively to provide resources that can be leveraged in a sustainable way, and share innovative models for educating children living in poverty. Today, Global Education Fund provides small, multi-year grants and other support to education entrepreneurs and their initiatives.
