In 2004 Global Education Fund partnered with Global Children, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting the disadvantaged children and families of Cambodia. This organization teaches traditional music and dance to children at the Kompong Speu and Kein Klang Orphanages, thirty miles from Phnom Penh. Executive Director Laura Smith-Louisell contacted Global Education Fund and expressed a desperate need for a library for the children in the Kompong Speu and Kein Klang Orphanages. As a result, $6,000 worth of books was shipped to these children.
Laura Smith-Louisell says, "Children are too often denied an education and are forced to work instead. In Stueng Meanchey district in Phnom Penh, Cambodia hundreds of children work at the garbage dump. All day these children climb through and sink into a sea of refuse. Often children are injured or suffer from ill health due to the unsanitary conditions".
