In May 2002, after reading an article on the Global Education Fund in the Denver Post, Ellie Newman gave us a call. Ellie has since provided books and educational supplies to dozens of schools in rural Jamaica.
After years of being a teacher and visiting schools in Russia, Thailand and Vietnam, Ellie visited Jamaica and was shocked to see the school conditions. The children at the Sudbury All-Age School and the Muschett High School in rural Jamaica had no books, no school supplies and no playground equipment. To attend school, children walk up to five miles. A typical first-grade class has from fifty-five to eighty students and children can attend school only when they have money to buy lunch.
Since she began volunteering with Global Education Fund, Ellie Newman has shipped 65,000 pounds of books and school supplies to schools in Jamaica! Global Education Fund is proud to have Ellie Newman's dedication to Jamaica under the umbrella of our organization.
