The literacy centers at La Familia Padre Fabretto orphanages in Nicaragua are up and running. The children at the orphanages in Managua, San Jose de Cusmapa, and Sumoto, Nicaragua now have access to literature, history, math and science books in Spanish. Since summer 1998, the Global Education Fund has been working with La Familia Padre Fabretto. When it became clear that what the organization needed most were reading centers, the Global Education Fund contacted publishing and book distribution companies for Spanish book donations. In May 1999, the orphanages received Spanish children?s books valued at thousands of dollars from the Global Education Fund. The orphanages at La Familia Padre Fabretto have since started a literacy program and a daily storytelling hour with the books donated by the Global Education Fund. This center not only provides essential educational materials but also acts as a community focal point for the children at the orphanages.
