When Mahadev’s father was alive, he went to school. His father died of tuberculosis when Mahadev was just six years old. His family had no income and still owed a lot of money for his father’s medicines and health care so Mahadev and his mother had to go to work in the bangle factory in Firozabad, India, to help earn money for his family to survive. They work 8-9 hours a day and after expenses are taken out only have about 30 rupees a day (60 cents a day in US dollars).
After working five years in the bangle factory, The Movement to a Child’s Right to Childhood (MCRC) intervened on behalf of Mahadev and filed the paperwork with the Labour Department for a scholarship for Mahadev to go to school.
Mahadev was admitted to the learning centre run by MCRC, a partner of Global Education Fund. Thanks to you, he now attends school every day. His teachers find him to be a bright child who takes lots of interest in studying.
Mahadev says he likes school because he has time to play and learn. He likes the Hindi, English and math lessons. In the future he wants to become a teacher. “I want to teach kids that can’t afford school fees. School is important because you can get somewhere in life,” said Mahadev.
