Children Helping Children
Global Education Fund welcomes children in the schools to connect to
the children in the orphanages by writing short letters, sending photos or making
simple items such as homemade bookmarks. Global Education Fund would be happy to
include these items with the book shipments. In addition, Global Education Fund
also welcomes fundraising efforts unique to each school, which will finance
purchasing shelves, tables, and storage in the orphanages.
Read-a-thon - Students get sponsored for reading. The school can set a day or week, and the students get paid a certain amount per minute of reading. This is a great way to build literacy awareness and help the orphans.
Toothbrush Drive & Pizza Sale - Students at Horizons Alternative School brought in new toothbrushes and collected books. They had a pizza fundraiser to send the children of SOS Orphanage in La Ceiba , Honduras on their first ever field trip. GEF sent the books and toothbrushes to the orphanage on behalf of the school.
Poetry Cafe - Fifth graders at Horizons Alternative School wrote and sold poems at a poetry event. They raised $500, which was sent to Saksham informal school in Dehli, India. This program teaches English to children of street cleaners, living in slums.
Scholastic or other book fairs - Schools can donate proceeds of a book fair to help purchase books. Horizons donated its proceeds from a Scholastic Book Fair, which netted about $1,200 worth of books from Scholastic. The books were sent to the Padre Rolando Orphanage in Antigua, Guatemala. Airline Ambassadors shipped and delivered the books. A monetary donation to physically build the library was sent along with the shipment.
Benefit Concert or Dance - Organize a performance event and charge admission and/or collect donations. The first grade class at Horizons raised $450 by putting on an international theme performance and selling stationary, to finance sending books to Zaruma, Ecuador.
Bake Sale - This is a school favorite. Parents and students donate baked goods, which are sold at an event or after school. This works best with one grade running the sale.
Bulb or Plant Sale - Flatirons Elementary's first grade class sold bulbs to finance the shipment of books to Safe Haven orphanage in Mae Sot, Thailand. They raised $900.
Sell Donated Items - Students at the John Burrows School in St. Louis, Missouri sold donated IZZE products. The proceeds, $1,600, were donated directly to Padre Rolando Orphanage in Antigua.
Spare Change Drive - Children bring in spare change and collect them in empty water bottles. The money raised is sent directly to the recipient orphanage.
Book Packing Volunteers - Watershed School students packed books to be sent.
